Using technology to improve the service
WorkLink uses the best available technologies to ensure—and demonstrate—that resources are used efficiently and well.
| |
| As WorkLink was designed, GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping pinpointed the geographic areas of greatest need. Now that we're in operation, other technologies help us collect data so we can optimize services and operate with maximum efficiency and effectiveness.

| · | Rider ID cards contain Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chips that broadcast to scanners in the vans, providing a highly accurate system of rider verification. |
| · | Global Positioning System (GPS) units in the vans identify precisely where each vehicle is at any moment. A computer in each van provides a continuous time stamp and consolidates the GPS record with the RFID signals. |
| · | A wireless internet connection transmits from the vans to WorkLink's administrative computers the detailed record of the times and locations where passengers enter and leave. |
This integrated system provides a continuous flow of accurate, real-time data: the routes and stops that are most and least used, along with the times of heavy and light usage. The staff carefully analyzes the information, allowing WorkLink to fine-tune the system. Hours and locations are adjusted to match needs—for instance, a new East Busway stop was created to allow riders easy access to Downtown, and new demand led to the addition of a route that includes the Waterfront retail/entertainment area, a major regional jobsite.
